About Lake Eibsee

History and Location

Lake Eibsee is located in the Bavarian Alps, close to the town of Grainau and just a short distance from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The lake covers an area of approximately 1.3 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 40 meters. Its crystal-clear waters are fed by numerous springs and surrounded by lush forests and majestic mountains, providing a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The lake has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, when it became a popular destination for artists and nature enthusiasts.

Why Visit Lake Eibsee?

Visiting Lake Eibsee is like stepping into a postcard. Of all the mountain lakes I’ve ever visited, it definitely ranks as one of the most magical. It’s impossible to convey with words the magic of Zugspitze as the backdrop to the turquoise lake.

The vibrant colors of the water change with the seasons, creating a stunning visual experience year-round.

In summer, you can enjoy swimming, paddle boating, and hiking around the lake’s scenic trails. In winter, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland perfect for snowshoeing and winter hiking.

Lake Eibsee is also conveniently located near other popular attractions in Bavaria, making it an ideal base for exploring the region. You can easily take a day trip from Munich, Germany or Innsbruck, Austria to Lake Eibsee.

Tips for Visiting Lake Eibsee

How to Get There

Getting to Lake Eibsee is fairly straightforward. If you’re traveling by car from Munich, you can reach the lake via the A95 autobahn towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Good to know: Once you get towards Lake Eibsee, there’s only one road that leads to this more remote area. It can get trafficked in peak summer season.

There are several parking areas available near the lake, but I recommend you arrive early to secure a spot. In November, which is in the shoulder season, the parking was full by around 11am/noon. All the parking is paid.

Alternatively, public transportation options include trains and buses from Munich or Garmisch-Partenkirchen that offer scenic routes through the Bavarian countryside. Check out this information on the official website.

How Long It Takes to Walk Around

The trail around Lake Eibsee is approximately 7 kilometers long and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to walk leisurely. The path is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels, making it an enjoyable experience for all kinds of travelers, including families.

I also saw visitors biking around the path – working out with a view!

Best Photo Spots

For photography enthusiasts, Lake Eibsee offers countless picturesque spots. Definitely bring along your favorite camera gear. Consider using a filter on your lens to reduce glare on the water’s surface.

I suggest getting to Lake Eibsee at sunrise to catch the reflection of the Zugspitze peak on the water. And if you’re visiting during the chillier months, you’ll also be able to capture the mysterious, beautiful mist that hangs out on the water’s surface before the warmth of the sun arrives.

Some of the best locations include:

What to Wear

Wearing comfortable shoes is essential as you’ll likely be walking along trails and exploring various viewpoints. The trails are mostly flat terrain, but walking on the gravel can still take a toll on your feet and some areas can be muddy.

Dress in layers to accommodate changing weather conditions—mornings can be cool while afternoons can become much warmer as the sun rises past the mountain peak.

Don’t forget your swimwear if you plan on taking a dip in the refreshing waters!

Things to Do

Besides walking around the lake trail, you can also rent water sports equipment like stand-up paddles and rowing boats at the rental place onsite.

The lake also has some onsite restaurants, as well as the Hotel Eibsee if you want to stay the night.

What to Visit Near Lake Eibsee

Zugspitze Cable Car or Famous Cogwheel Train

A visit to Lake Eibsee wouldn’t be complete without enjoying Germany’s highest peak. From the same parking area as the lake, you can ride on the record-breaking Zugspitze cable car. Your other option is to take the historic cogwheel train.

Check out the pricing of the cable car and train, as well as the timetables. Keep in mind the activity will likely last several hours when planning your itinerary.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Just a short drive from the lake is Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a charming town known for its traditional Bavarian architecture and culture.

Explore local shops and dine at cozy restaurants like the Waffle Haus – the pistachio waffles were incredible!

Munich

If you have extra time during your visit, consider spending one day in Munich. The capital city of Bavaria is rich in history and culture, with iconic monuments like the clock tower display at Marienplatz, Nymphenburg Palace, and incredible churches and parks.
